Zygmunt YuzakApril 22, 1928 ~ June 23, 2017 (age 89)
Zyg passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Ethel; his daughters Monica (Yves Trudeau), Myra (Roger Kergoat), Marlene (Allan Casey), Maxine (Lee Forand), Mae-Lynn (Andre Normandin); his grandchildren Anika (Jarami), Erica (Mike) and their son Bodhi, Esther, Lewis, David, Hugh; sisters in law Lillian Yuzak, Adeline Pacholka, Donna Oleskiw; brothers in law Nick Blocka, John Pacholka; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Anton and Apolonia; his siblings Phyllis, Victor, Bernard and Regena. Zyg grew up on the family farm near Alvena Saskatchewan. After completing high school at St.Peter’s College in Muenster, he attended Teacher’s College (Normal School) in Saskatoon and at 19 years of age took his first teaching job in a small one room country school near Alvena. It was while teaching in Alvena that he courted (with some persistence the story is told) and married Ethel Oleskiw.
Zyg’s teaching jobs took them first to Aberdeen and eventually to Prince Albert, where Zyg taught Physical Education and Mathematics at Riverside Collegiate Institute and Carlton Comprehensive High schools. Over the next decade, while raising five daughters and working full time, he attained his Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts Degrees. After teaching for 35 years, he had the good fortune to be able to spend the next 35 years in retirement enjoying life with Ethel and his extended family. Zyg was always an active person from coaching athletics in his days as a physical education instructor, to playing commercial league softball. In retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling and was an accomplished gunsmith. He and Ethel were avid travellers, enjoying both independent travel to off the beaten path destinations and also luxury cruising. One of their last adventures together was an extended cruise when they renewed their wedding vows on their 60th wedding anniversary. Zyg was very involved in his community and church. He served as a 4th degree knight with the Knights of Columbus and was recently honoured for his 30 years of volunteer work with Meals on Wheels. He was a charitable man who believed in providing for the disadvantaged both financially and through prayer. His blessings at family dinners were legendary in their length and detail in remembering the less fortunate amongst us.
We mourn his loss and celebrate his life.
